Placidina Fernandes do Nascimento was born on 8 February 1930 in Fazenda do Imbaré, Joaima municipality, Minas Gerais State, to farmers Justino Ribeiro da Silva and Quirina Fernandes do Nascimento. She married Everaldo Pereira da Cruz, also a farmer and they had a daughter Isabel, already deceased. She died in 1986 from heart disease. She was a well-loved midwife and many children in Santana do Araçuaí and vicinity were born with her help. She spent her time in farm work and the production of utility pottery, making water jars and earthenware for domestic use. She learned to model figurines with her neighbour and friend D. Isabel. Her figures are to be found in several Brazilian museums.
