Maria de Caruaru
Maria Josefa da Conceição was born in 1916 in the village of Alto do Moura close to Caruaru town, Pernambuco State. She was one of the first generation of local potters to become famous nationwide. She did not produce much in her later years, with sporadic work. She was interested in contemporary themes and her work is outstanding for innovation and the objective treatment given to her space ships and capsules. She was 65 years old when she died in her hometown in 1981.
