Although it is not possible to set a pattern, it is a fact that a large number of folk artists have had little schooling and many never attended school at all, which did not prevent the rise of other forms of transmission and innovation of traditional learning. Nor did this hinder the appearance of major folk art production centres. In ceramics, the more renowned centres are Alto do Moura (Caruaru, Pernambuco), Tracunhaém (Pernambuco); Campo Alegre, Santana do Araçuaí and Caraí (Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais) and some places in the Valley of Paraíba in São Paulo. In these small communities, where the collective work is predominant, learning the techniques has been passed on informally permitting the continuation of new artisans and artists.
